Because of the indefinite shelf-life of propane, a propane-powered generator is a great option for emergency backup power to protect against disasters like hard storms, tornados, snow storms, solar flares, global financial and political difficulties along with other issues that could potentially cause disruptions in electricity and critical services.
The best alternative would however be a dual-fuel generator which can run on both propane and petrol, some also run on natural gas. There are many generators which are built like this from the start but conversion packages are also available to change petrol generators into dual or tri fuel generators that will run on propane and/or natural gas.
